Moving to ATLANTA
So I have decided to move away from my hometown of Philadelphia, PA to lay my lovely locs and start anew in a better place. After a summer of frequent travels and much deliberation, I plan on making moves to Atlanta, GA.
Other cities that I looked into moving to and visited this summer include:
Los Angeles, CA- pretentious, expensive, and God forbid I end up in an earthquake.
Chicago, IL- beautiful, bustling city... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too cold in the winter. I hate the snow.
Miami, FL- don't think I cold deal with hurricanes or all the hot bodies and clubbing year round. I would ge myself into some serious trouble.
Washington, DC- nice. Not much more to say about it. But something there that I can't quite put my finger tells me not to move there.
New York, NY- I lived there while an undergrad. It will always hold a special place in my heart and I will always have a place to stay when visiting, just not for me. Been there done that. I need something completely new and different.
Atlanta has impressed me the most. It doesn't get too cold there in the winter ( I heard it rarely snows and when it does snow, it's puny). In ATL, my money isn't funny. I can live in a metropolitan area and be able to maintain a pretty decent life. rrent is affordable, and I can even begin really saving for a house... a real house and not one of these rowhouses that are all over Philly.
There are tons of black folks in ATL too. Not that I don't like other ethnicities that exist, it's just that there are such a huge amount of young, black professionals in that city. It feels great being in the company of up and coming blacks that are about something... anything. All the ambition that swirls about down there inspires me to do more.
When I move, I plan on working at one of the many universities in the area. I'm pretty sure I'd have no problem getting hired at one of these instutions and we all know a perk of working for a university is free tuition (yeeeeaaaaaaaahhh boooooooooooooooyyyyyyyy!) If anyone has a heads up with any job leads, let a brotha know. If I have any success, there's a drink and maybe a bag of Spicy Nacho Doritos in it for you.
So ATL, I'll see you in a little less than a year. I hope to have a warm welcome. To all my friends that live in the area, I'll see ya soon. I will register at Bed Bath and Beyond as well as Crate and Barrel for housewarming gifts.
